What Is Toxic Load? Why We Care About It at Dandle

What Is Toxic Load? Why We Care About It at Dandle

You've probably heard the term "toxic load" before. Depending on where you hear it, it's either blamed for every health issue imaginable or dismissed as nothing more than a wellness buzzword.

At Dandle, we don't believe either of those extremes.

We don't think your body is so incapable of detoxing itself that you should live in fear of the occasional cheesy bean and rice burrito, and we don't believe every ingredient with a long scientific name is automatically dangerous. At the same time, we don't think it's unreasonable to ask questions about the products we use every single day.

Our philosophy has always been simple: if you have the opportunity to reduce unnecessary exposures without sacrificing results, why wouldn't you?

That question is what led us to carefully curate every skincare line we carry, and it's why toxic load is a topic we believe deserves a balanced conversation.

What Is Toxic Load?

Toxic load, sometimes called toxic burden, refers to the total amount of environmental stressors and chemicals your body is exposed to over time. These exposures come from countless sources—many of which are just part of everyday life.

Think about everything you encounter in a typical day. You breathe outdoor air, drink water, eat food, drive through traffic, clean your home, sit on furniture, walk on treated grass, and use personal care products. Each of those things contributes to the overall "workload" your body has to manage.

Fortunately, your body is incredibly well-equipped for this job.

Your liver, kidneys, lungs, digestive system, and skin are constantly filtering, processing, and eliminating waste. They don't need detox teas, juice cleanses, or expensive supplements to do what they were designed to do. While there’s nothing wrong with using these methods to support detox, our body is already detoxifying itself every minute of every day.

Where the conversation around toxic load becomes interesting isn't because your body is failing to do it’s job—it's because we have some control over the number of unnecessary exposures we add to its workload. And the question at hand is, “Am I stewarding those choices well?”

Why Skincare Is Part of the Conversation

Many of us think carefully about what we put into our bodies.

We'll pay extra for organic produce. We'll install water filters. We'll read nutrition labels before buying food. We spend time researching supplements and trying to make healthier choices for ourselves and our families.

But very few of us apply that same level of curiosity to the products we put on our bodies. Often times, if it has a clean, simple label that insinuates “clean product inside,” we don’t bother to question the ingredients.

Think about your morning routine. Before you've even had breakfast, you may have used shampoo, conditioner, body wash, facial cleanser, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen, makeup, deodorant, dry shampoo, hairspray, and perfume.

That's easily ten to fifteen products before 9 a.m.

Collectively, those products may contain hundreds of individual ingredients.

Does that mean those products are harming you?

Not necessarily. But if skincare and body care products are something you use every single day for decades, it makes sense to be intentional about the ingredients you're choosing whenever possible.

Does Your Skin Really Absorb What You Put on It?

One of the biggest misconceptions about skincare is that everything you apply is immediately absorbed into your bloodstream.

That's simply not true.

Your skin's primary job is to protect you. If it absorbed everything it touched, you couldn't swim in a pool or take a shower without absorbing gallons of water.

However, your skin isn't completely impermeable either. Certain ingredients are specifically designed to penetrate the skin. That's why nicotine patches, hormone patches, prescription creams, and medicated gels are effective. The amount that enters the body depends on the ingredient, the formula, how often it's used, where it's applied, and the health of your skin barrier.

The truth is somewhere in the middle. Your skincare isn't "just sitting on top of your skin," but neither is every ingredient flooding directly into your bloodstream. Understanding that balance is one reason we pay attention to what goes into the products we use.

Why We Chose Clean Skincare at Dandle

People sometimes assume we chose clean skincare because we think conventional skincare is bad.

That's not the case. We chose clean skincare because we believe products should be thoughtfully formulated. When we're selecting a skincare for Dandle, we aren't looking for trendy packaging or the latest social media hype. We're looking for products that are effective, backed by good science, and made with ingredients that serve a purpose. We want to make your life easier and help you to build sustainable routines that nourish your body. We don’t have a giant retail space full of choices to wade through. We have carefully selected products that work and an educated staff to help you find exactly what you need in our small boutique.

That's not about fear.

It's about being intentional.

We know our clients can't control everything they're exposed to throughout the day. You can't control the air you breathe, every chemical used in manufacturing, or every pesticide used on crops. But your skincare routine is one of the few daily exposures you can control, and we think that's worth paying attention to.

Ingredients We Pay Close Attention To

Choosing clean skincare doesn't mean avoiding every ingredient with a complicated name. In fact, many scientifically developed ingredients are incredibly effective and completely appropriate to use.

Instead, we pay attention to ingredients that have raised legitimate concerns or simply don't add enough value to justify their use.

Fragrance

Synthetic fragrance is one of the most common causes of skin irritation and allergic reactions. It can also represent dozens of undisclosed ingredients under a single word on an ingredient label. While not everyone reacts to fragrance, many people prefer to minimize it whenever possible.

PFAS

PFAS, often called "forever chemicals," have been used in some cosmetics to improve wear and water resistance. Because they persist in the environment and can accumulate over time, many brands—including the ones we choose to work with—have moved away from using them.

Unnecessary Fillers

Sometimes a long ingredient list doesn't make a product better. We appreciate formulations where ingredients have a clear purpose instead of simply making a product smell stronger, feel silkier, or sit longer on a store shelf.

It's Not About Fear—It's About Thoughtful Choices

One thing you'll never hear us say at Dandle is that you need to throw away everything in your bathroom. That's unrealistic, expensive, and honestly unnecessary. Reducing your toxic load isn't about achieving perfection. It's about making better choices over time.

When your moisturizer runs out, maybe you replace it with one from Dandle.

When you're shopping for sunscreen, maybe you choose one that aligns with your values while still protecting your skin.

When you find products that perform beautifully without unnecessary additives, you stick with them.

Those small decisions, repeated every day, are much more meaningful than making dramatic changes for a week and then giving up.

Why This Matters to Us

At Dandle, every facial, every recommendation, and every product on our shelves reflects the same philosophy.

We believe skincare should support your skin's natural function—not work against it.

We believe ingredients should have a purpose.

We believe effective skincare and cleaner formulations can exist together.

Most importantly, we believe you deserve honest conversations—not fear-based marketing or empty promises.

We're not interested in convincing you that everything is toxic. We're interested in helping you make informed decisions about the products you use every day. Because at the end of the day, healthier skin isn't about chasing perfection. It's about making thoughtful choices, one product at a time.

The Bottom Line

Your body already knows how to detox itself. That's not something you need to fix. But you do have the ability to make intentional decisions about the products you use every day.

At Dandle, we don't choose clean skincare because we think it's trendy. We choose it because we believe reducing unnecessary exposures—while still delivering incredible results—is simply a smarter way to care for your skin.

For us, that's what reducing toxic load is really about.

Not fear.

Not perfection.

Just making better choices when you have the opportunity to do so.

My challenge to you is to make one small swap to your routine. A great place to start is with something the whole household uses like a facial cleanser, body wash, or body lotion.
